Steller Sea Lion
The Steller sea lion, or northern sea lion, is the largest member of the eared seal family (Otariidae). These impressive marine mammals can weigh up to 1,200 kilograms (2,600 pounds) for males and measure over 3 meters (10 feet) in length. Found along the North Pacific coasts of Russia, Alaska, and Canada, they inhabit rocky shores and island beaches.
Steller sea lions are highly social animals, often forming large colonies during the breeding season. Males establish territories and gather harems of females, fiercely defending their areas. These animals are opportunistic feeders, preying on fish, squid, and other marine organisms.
Unfortunately, Steller sea lion populations have declined in certain areas due to overfishing, climate change, and entanglement in fishing gear. Efforts to protect their habitats and regulate fishing practices are vital for their recovery.
