African Penguin
The African penguin, also known as the “jackass penguin” for its braying call, is the only penguin species native to Africa. These charming birds are found along the rocky coasts of South Africa and Namibia, where they nest in burrows or sheltered areas.
African penguins are excellent swimmers, reaching speeds of up to 20 kilometers per hour (12 mph) as they hunt for fish, squid, and crustaceans. Their black-and-white plumage provides camouflage, with their white bellies blending into the bright ocean surface and their black backs helping them hide from predators above.
Sadly, African penguins are endangered due to habitat loss, overfishing, and oil spills. Conservation programs, including protected breeding areas and rehabilitation centers, are crucial to ensure their survival.
